line artist statment
My work looks at the idea of the assumptions we make about others. I found myself assuming everyone around me was the same so I took some time to see if those around me were truly the same or if it was just me making large assumptions. De Certeau says “He does other things with the same thing and goes beyond the limits that the determinants of the object set on its utilization. In the same way, the walker transforms each spatial signifier into something else.” Which I was able to use to identify things that others were using as a verifier to see if they fit my idea of who they were or not. In each piece in this set, the types of people around me were represented in different ways. Those around me that were NYU students with brown lunch bags were represented by brown rectangles. Those that I saw that appeared to be NYU students for other reasons such as they were wearing NYU clothing or an NYU key chain were represented by a purple triangle. Then finally those that I assumed were NYU students but could not identify if they truly were or not are represented by black circles. All of these shapes are either alone which represents that the person was sitting or not moving or they have a black line connected to the shape that shows where that person was moving.
Overall in this project I wanted to highlight the assumptions we make about those around us as well as show more of what it is like to go to college in the city with an open campus so you never know who could be around you.

- “To walk is to lack place” people are always moving in the city to the point the city becomes a place full of people in search of something more
- When all of the pieces of a city are put together it begins to form a sort of constellations that help to visualize all of the different pieces
- each piece when completed should be similar to a constellation
- Without the masses of people that live in the city the city would lose its worth because those that occupy the city are the ones that shape and create the city into what is truly is or at least should be
news artist statment
In this project I wanted to focus on bringing the newspaper back to life. Newspapers are dying and this is largely due to the fact that we have, what most of us consider, more engaging ways of getting our news. I wanted to give the paper a way to further engage with the audience. I accomplished this by taking the newspaper and creating a 3D tangible piece that coordinated or represented the paper that day.
We are so used to interacting with our news in some way when we typically see the news on our screens by clicking, liking or commenting on the topic. However with simple newspapers we can't connect to it quite as much by just reading or flipping through the pages. In “The Last Newspaper” podcast one of the artists explained how a newspaper is becoming like sculpture; nearly dead and it's just not as practical. This idea of the papers nearly being dead made really made me want to bring more life back to the paper. Whereas the idea that it was just not as practical made me want to be able to reuse other parts of the paper in some way since I bought the whole paper and if I was only using the front page that would contribute much more waste to our already highly polluted world. Later in the podcast one of the artists also mentioned that newspapers are a very “quiet media” unlike most that we use in today's world. I agree with this due to the fact that all our other news sources are either literally louder volume wise, such as TV, radio, or podcasts, or they can also just be loud due to the amount of information we are getting from one topic, such as comments on news articles, many differing opinions on twitter or just from those around us persuading us. I wanted to make the paper feel louder as well and I felt as though by making it a 3D element really gave it the volume it needed.
Overall there is so much to newspaper that we can appreciate in a very different way than technology based media. Of course there are pros and cons to both ways however, bring the paper back to life even just slightly as I have keeps it a part of our culture which is a great thing since for so long it has been a physical representation of our day to day culture.

shape artist statment
Glendalys Medina told us that we need to find our own visual language. This really captivated me. Language is how we communicate with others, so in art we need to find how we can best communicate in our own creative way.
In the piece I created during class I used watercolor and specific shapes to begin to communicate how I feel when my mood is shifting. Then I re-traced the shape using a ballpoint pen. This made the piece feel too neat so I then added splattered watercolor to represent how even when mood changes you still have some emotions that are from a different mood. It is never a clean or smooth transition.
For my tracing shapes I traced three shapes that I felt like I see/use everyday. I wanted the shapes to be very representative of myself and my artistic language. I first used a perfume bottle to trace then combined it with a circle around it to give it a bubble sort of look to it. Then I repeated that shape to create a larger circle, then I wanted to feel like the mist of perfume when using it. The next item I used was a hanger, I wanted to see how I could manipulate an item most of us use everyday. I manipulated it by adding a set of hexagons on top of it. I felt like this reminded me of a beehive in nature and fast fashion can be so harmful to nature that I wanted to use the juxtaposition of the two items to show that. Lastly I traced a tiny statue of an angel that I keep on my desk. It created a very unique combination of shapes from the wings and positioning of the body that I didn't want to mix another object with it. I then repeated the angles in a sort of circle-halo shape to feel like they were all ready to look over and protect one thing. I shifted the width of the trace between each angle to show variance. Then I gave it a black background and made the angles white since that is such an identifiable trait of angles.

Color
The model climbed up upon an ash branch that is reaching for the sky. Her hands grip around it as her head rests against it, messing up her almost golden hair. The sky, filled slightly with clouds, whites and light blues mix as it fills in as the backdrop for the image. The maroon dress she has on is more vibrant than any of the surrounding colors, popping out and bringing your eye in. The maroon is abrupt and direct in contrast with the softness of the blue sky and the ash branch.
It seems like maroon is most often found in clothing. In the maroon color excerpt from Cabinet magazine when thinking of maroon the author says “I may as well get it over with and say that my first association with maroon is with an outfit I made for myself as a teenager". This feels similar to how I feel about the color as well, except inside of an outfit for myself it is this dress and how memorable this vivid dress was against the less background. When think of maroon I also think of this outfit my music teahcer in elementry school used to wear. It was a maroon skirt partnered with a very floral top and a matching maroon headband. It was so colorful just like she was and just like life was when you are that young.
3D
In this project after many different attempts and trial and error I finally was successful when using my 3rd baked good, a double chocolate muffin. Before that I tried a front door but the lighting shifted too much creating harsh shadows. Then a statue outdoors that had too much of a glare to it. After that I tried a muffin but used flash which made it unable to work. Then I tried a piece of coffee cake but the background and the dull shape also made it not work. Finally I ended up with a dark muffin on top of a light colored bowl and newspaper in the background to create more contrast, which worked great. The dark color along with the organic texture of the muffin and chocolate chips this made for a great object.
