Readings and Responses: After reading Michel de Certeau's "The Practice of Everyday Life: Walking in the City", the author, Michel de Certeau, goes into depth about “The concept-city is decaying. Does that mean that the illness afflicting both the rationality that founded it and its professionals afflicts the urban population as well? Perhaps cities are deteriorating along with the procedures that organized them. But we must be careful here. The ministers of knowledge have always assumed that the whole universe was threatened by the very changes that affected their ideologies and their positions. They transmute the misfortune of their theories into theories of misfortune. When they transform their bewilderment into catastrophes, when they seek to enclose the people in the panic of their discourses, are they once more necessarily right?” Michael de Certeau in his writing “The Practice of Everyday Life” manages to reach into a newfound ideology of creatively thinking, in a metaphoric sense of understanding ourselves as repeating ourselves in our form and concepts. Almost everything we do and say is not original, it is all founded from its predecessors.
WWW and The Library of Babel
After reading both essays, there are a number of associations between the technical and fictional/philosophical readings. In Jorge Luis Borge's The Library of Babel, Borges features a number of essays and writings. Tim Berners-Lee's written work "The World Wide Web" pretty much cleanly explains the internet, formerly World Wide Web, in its understanding to humans from conception. Jorge Luis Borges creates some sort of storyline based on the idea of the divine Library, one that knows all, the answer to everything: a pre- written contextualization of the internet we have today. According to Lee, WWW defines the "idea of a boundless information world in which all items have a reference by which they can be retrieved..." In conjunction with Borge's writing, his description of a library that knows all is emphasized in his words " I cannot combine some characters which the divine library has not foreseen and which in one of its secret tongues do not contain a terrible meaning...
The Last Newspaper
The Last Newspaper: Artist in Conversation with Sarah Charlesworth, Aleksandra Mir and Nate Lowman was a very intriguing interview that helped me see different perspectives of the artist spectrum. These artists have all seen the use of newspaper thinking and how it affects the art world, actually more so works in conjunction with it. There were moments in which I did not agree with some statements. I did not gather notes at all because I was listening entirely while working on the newspaper project, but I found it very interesting how they brought up the feeling of otherness indirectly.
