Shape Project Write-Up
The way in which I approached my shape project is a little bit different than everyone else's. Rather than having each image only include a pattern, I decided to add a twist to each of my designs and make them all advertisements. For my first pattern, my goal was to make art relating to the current pandemic that we are facing while also having it look like an ad for a high fashion brand. I chose to photograph a Purell bottle as a representation of a COVID-19 necessity while mimicking the aesthetic of the brand Off-White. I did this because I find it ironic how an item we so easily took for granted beforehand became a luxury item in the span of days and I wanted to point to that in my ad.
The next pattern I did was of a Spam can. I wanted to mimic Andy Warhol’s style in my ad which was as his work deals with a lot of repetition and reproduction. After tracing the Spam can (which took way too long) I colored the cans in colors that are representative of who I am. I love spam but my mom never let me eat it growing up. Now that I make my own decisions as an adult, Spam represents freedom to me in a way.
The last pattern I did was a design that I created for my friend’s magazine. I had drawn a really simple swan because my friend calls himself “black swan,” but I couldn’t think of anything to do in order to make it look more interesting. I decided to take a picture of the design I had drawn in my notebook and digitize it in illustrator and see what I could do with it. It turned out really great because of how easy it was to stylize the design in ways I would not have thought to on paper. I wanted to make my friend a handkerchief with this design and didn’t want the final product to be too crowded so I decided on keeping only three colors and only repeating the shape four times. All I care about is that my friend approved.
