Line Project Artist Statement
For the line projet, I chose to focus on different things happening around my dorm. I designated different colors to represent different moving parts and then recorded what I observed. For example I chose to record different objects that flew by outside my window so I assigned different colors for birds, helicopters and airplanes and then drew them at varying heights on the page relative to where I saw them in real life. Some of the drawings were a little bit more conceptual but still representative of my expirience. I chose to represent basic movements that could be interesting. “There is a rhetoric of walking” said Certeau, which influenced me to record my roomates movement. I enjoyed making these drawings because it made me focus on the moment and capture it as I exprienced it.
Newspaper Statement
NOTES FROM THE LISTENING: Interesting how newspapers were referred to as “local” and the idea of the news being localized. I think that in reality most news is worldwide and accessible to a lot of people. The newspaper is no longer the main source of information for many people because they receive their information from everywhere, digitally mostly. Blocking out the text on the newspapers to reveal that most of the photos are of “men” and “war”. In the paper it takes 24 hours to “fix” something in a newspaper where as online the information can be changed instantly. Newspaper is just mundane statements about facts and people lives. Could be rearranged to create another narrative. The images is the actual “art” in the newspaper and then all the writing is just more speculation. Who comes up with the headlines? Newspapers are outdated but people like the physical version because it feels as though you have really taken in the information. On the internet you click on the information you want to hear but in physical form you read what is given to you. Art has the capacity to influence and change the way we think about and view the world. Listening to this gave me a lot to think about in regards to making my newspaper. I now am going to consider what each photo means and what they mean in relationship to each other. When looking through headlines, I am going to try and notice themes like war or men. I want to also look at which issues are “local” vs worldwide and which ones they give more attention to.
Shape Pattern Textile Response
For this project I chose to take pictures of objects in the classroom. I photographed my tea, a stool on wheels and a clamp lamp. I chose these objects specificaly because I liked their lines and the way they were shaped. I traces all of them in illustrator and then mayde patterns of varying dimensions depending on what I thought looked good.
Sky Blue Color Response
One color that we see a lot of in the world is blue. When we look at the ocean, many times it reflects a brilliant blue. When we look up on a clear day, the blue sky shines back at us. Sky blue specifically was first used as a term by John Nieuhoff to describe vibrant flowers. "They are of a lovely sky blue colour, and yellow in the middle". Sky blue is also synonymous with the name Celeste, having said that there are myths recounting how Celeste got its name. Now, it is referred to as hex color #87CEEB when translated into a digital language. It is crazy to me that a color can now be be identified by numbers and letters to reproduce an exact hue found in nature. Sky blue also looks similar to light sky blue, baby blue, deep sky blue, French sky blue and many others.
