LINE DRAWING
“New York has never learned the art of growing old by playing on all its past. Its present invents itself, from hour to hour, in the way of throwing away its previous accomplishments and challenging the future,” Michel de Certeau states so in The Practice of Everyday Life: Walking in the City. New York City is different everyday. No matter how many years one has lived in this city, it always has something new to offer.
I live in Stuyvesant Town, and I attend NYU Tisch. I pass by New York’s culture center, East Village, everyday on my way to school. This area of the city changes rapidly from day to day. No matter if it is a new store, an unfamiliar restaurant, or a different person, this twenty-minutes walk always gives me surprises. I love to explore, so each day I choose to take a slightly different route. In my line drawing assignment, each image represents one route that I take, and each route represents my new understanding of this familiar area of New York City.
